Do I need my own kayak and gear?

--Yes.  To take a course you will need a kayak, paddle, PFD, whistle, safety rope, and bailing device.  These may be able to be rented from local outfitting stores or you can always borrow from a friend!  I may be able to rent you a set up for a course but there are no guarantees.

Will I receive a certification?

--Yes.  For the skill based levels of the Paddle Canada program you will receive a certification if you successfully complete the course.  No certification is given for clinics.

Are the courses hard?

--These courses are designed to get people into the sport in a fun and enjoyable way.  As you progress through each level of the program they do become more challenging, but you also learn the skills to overcome these challenges along the way.

What happens if I fail?

--In the rare case that a participant is unsuccessful, you will be given a conditional pass with the opportunity to come back and show you have developed your skills.  If a participant is struggling in several areas a lower level may be awarded.  I believe in making sure everyone knows the expected outcomes at the beginning of each course.  My goal is to do everything practical in our time frame to give participants the greatest chance of success.

Do I need to start at the basic level?

--No.  i actually recommend people start at level 1 if they intend to kayak on the ocean.  For small lakes and ponds, a basic course would get the job done, however a level 1 course is much more in depth and has a strong focus on rescues and safety.

If a participant has relevant skill and experience, an assessment may be done to take level 2 and 3.
